L'élection présidentielle de 1974

The election is early after the death of Georges Pompidou on 2 April 1974. The majority splits between Jacques Chaban-Delmas, a Gaullist, and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Minister of Finance. Part of the Gaullists, led by Jacques Chirac, backs Giscard d'Estaing. François Mitterrand, the joint candidate of the left, comes far ahead in the first round.
